Antibiotics or irrigation with anti-microbials (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be recommended to help control the growth of bacteria. In some cases, we may place antibiotic gels in the periodontal pockets after scaling and root planing to further control infection and encourage normal healing.
Even in severe cases of periodontal disease, non-surgical periodontal therapy may often precede surgery. This is done to reduce the level of infection prior to surgery and may limit the extent of the surgical area.
